The Little Bird seen with the BoeingAH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter.
Tests in April 2006 demonstrated the Apache's ability to remotely control the ULB's weapon payload.
"The Boeing unmanned Little Bird (ULB) demonstrator is a modification of the MD 530F single-turbine helicopter, designed for both manned and unmanned flight. The ULB can be remotely operated or programmed for autonomous operations in any of its three operational modes: dual pilot, single pilot or unmanned flight operations. The high payload capacity allows missions to include long-endurance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions using heavy, high-capability sensors. ..."
"For the US Army, the missions of the manned / unmanned A/MH-6X Little Bird could include surveillance, as a wideband communications node, resupply of troops in battlefield forward positions, the extraction of stranded soldiers in the battlefield and the rescue of downed pilots. ..."

It's funny you mention the Little Bird, I was just reading some extra info about it's latest versions a few hours ago.

Speaking Of The Little Bird
A New Version Is Planned To Be Constructed The "Stalker"
It's Completely Awesome, And Is Unmanned, With Gatling Guns Replacing Miniguns
The Gatling Gun Intended Is The :
20 mm XM301 Three-Barrel Light Weight Cannon Mounted In A Turreted Gun System (500 Round Capacity)
(The Same One Used On The Comanche)
Yeah People May Think This Is Too Heavy Or Too Powerful For The Little Bird
But The Thing Is They're Putting That G-Gun Under It Really Light It's 80.5 Pounds (36.5 kg)
And Replacing The Miniguns By Rockets/Rocket Pods Or Advanced Surveillance Equipment
XM-301 Statistics :
The XM301 produced by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products is the lightest 20mm Gatling gun in the world. It features firing rates of 750 and 1,500 shots per minute, making it the ideal weapon for platforms that require air-to-air and air-to-ground lethality in a lightweight package.
Specifications:
Gun Type: Three-Barrel, 20mm, Externally Powered Gatling Gun
Weight: 80.5 Pounds (36.5 kg)
Rate of Fire: Up to 1,500 Shots Per Minute
Dispersion: 2.2 Milliradians, one sigma radial
Muzzle Velocity: 3,380 (1,030m) Feet Per Second
Ammunition Capacity: 500 Rounds
Drive System: Hydraulic, Electric, Pneumatic
Feed System: Linked or Linkless

Too true, at this moment it looks like the Little Birds will still watch a lot of action in the next decades (specially since the last Little Bird upgrades further extend it's mission capabilities and technology support ).

Re: High Tech and Curious Weaponry
ARTHUR is a military radar system originally developed by Ericsson Microwave Systems (now Saab Microwave Systems) in close cooperation with the Swedish Defence Material Administration and Norwegian Army Material Command.
ARTHUR can operate as a stand-alone medium-range Weapons Locating Radar or a long-range weapon locating system, consisting of 2 to 4 radars working in coordination. This flexibility enables the system to maintain a constant surveillance of an area of interest on a complex battlefield.
It detects hostile projectiles and calculates their points of origin with great accuracy and these positions are automatically relayed to friendly artillery units, which can then return fire. ARTHUR also tracks out-going projectiles from friendly artillery and calculates points of impact. The radar is capable of detecting and track very small targets such as mortar bombs in the presence of clutter and electronics countermeasures (ECM).
With its low weight, small size and single vehicle configuration when mounted on a BV206, the system has high tactical and operational mobility and is capable of manoeuvering in the most difficult of terrain.
In a demonstration in Hungary, ARTHUR was able to detect and locate the firing units for 500 assorted rockets, cannon shells, and mortar rounds.
The British say that ARTHUR meets their requirement to locate any artillery piece firing within 15km of friendly troops within 75 meters. It can be carried by a C-130 or slung under a heavy lift helicopter such as a Chinook. Its air mobility allows it for use by light and rapid reaction forces such as the airborne and Marine units.

Re: High Tech and Curious Weaponry
Excellent post man. That is a really interesting system.
If TAOW had something like that then a silencer upgrade for infantry doesn't sound so bad.
Maybe show lens glare instead of the actual unit, unless you have a system like ARTHUR, then show the unit.
Check this out.

Looks pretty real dosen,t it.
I wish we could do something like that in TAOW.

Re: High Tech and Curious Weaponry
Wow!
That is extremely real looking.
I'd love to play that mission. Sadly, I don't have COD4, or a machine that will run it.
It would make for a nice mission if it's possible. Of course, I don't think you could get it as realistic looking as the one in COD4. The big thing would be to have a user controllable AC-130 that wont fly off after 30 seconds like the regular one in the ZH. Of course the more I think about it, it might be able to change the timing the AC-130 hovers around the target using a map.ini to change the timing. I'll have to look at it.
I know from one of the original ZH missions that there is a 'public opinion' counter/script that somehow reduced public opinion during the mission for such things as collateral damage. I can see that script being needed for this type of mission.
It might be possible, just not nearly as cool as the COD4 version.

Re: High Tech and Curious Weaponry
I just think that no, the graphics as stunning as they are aren't going to match up to CoD MW, but then again you can't control a whole army with that game. Whats really going to make TAOW shine in my mind is building your army to your own specifications, upgrades and how they play into different tactics. To me they are kina one in the same, just appearing from a different perspective.

Same thought as mine, though I love to play as an individual unit (such as CoD4), I also love to control many units in real time such as ZH (it's probable that in the future, some brand new game might fuse the two genres by containing features from both into one package).
The advantage of FPS's over RTS and other strategy games is that the detail is much superior in First Person Shooters (for obvious reasons) and strategy games have to reduce the visual factor in order to maintain a smooth gamin'.
Even so, some modern RTS games have excellent graphic quality and could be easily used as an FPS platform (some examples include World in Conflict, Company of Heroes or Joint Task Force which, when set to high graphic settings, are extremely realistic looking).
I'd say it's only a matter of time till the two genres are merged into one package, specially since pc power and internet capacity/speed is always increasing and giving new possibilities to game creators.

I can't wait for the day when they do merge the two and you can start building your own personal army of various units like tanks, aircraft, ships, at you disposal, control them one at a time, but then when you die and respawn you can select from your arsenal again to keep on fighting. Then have a whole bunch of players.

Too true, at first I thought that C&C Renegade was "that game", but unfortunately it wasn't
I suppose it's only a matter of time though

It's very interesting that you mentioned this, some time ago I've been wondering about the same thing, however:
In 2007, AFSOC initiated a program to upgrade the armament of existing AC-130s still in service. The test program planned for the 25 mm GAU-12/U and 40 mm Bofors cannon on the AC-130U gunships to be replaced with two 30 mm Mk 44 Bushmaster II cannons. In 2007, the Air Force modified four AC-130U gunships as test platforms for the Bushmasters. However, AFSOC canceled its plans to install the new cannons on its fleet of AC-130Us. It has since removed the guns and re-installed the original 40 mm cannons and returned the planes to combat duties. Brig. Gen. Bradley A. Heithold, AFSOC's director of plans, programs, requirements and assessments, said on 11 August 2008 that the effort was canceled due to problems with the Bushmaster's accuracy "at the altitude we were employing it" in tests. There were also schedule considerations that drove the decision, he said.
There are also plans to equip these with missiles/rockets and other weapons, but since at the moment those are only plans I highly doubt we're including them in the mod.
For those reasons I think that our Spooky Gunships will use the "typical" (yet devastating) and current Spooky weapon load:
- 25mm GAU-12/U Equalizer Gatling Gun
- 40mm L60 Bofors Cannon
- 105mm M102 Howitzer

the ac-130 can also have a 7.62 gun
Indeed, the older AC-130's could also accept an optional 7.62 General Electric GAU-2/A minigun, in fact, during the first operational AC-130 combat missions in Nam in the 60's (AC-130A "Spooky II") the GAU-2/A was one of the main weapons alongside the heavier 20mm M61 Vulcan which is also being currently retired from AC-130 service.
The GAU-2/A minigun was mostly used in the late 60's and early 70's and was gradually set to a secondary weapon role, it was eventually replaced with heavier armament (namely the 40mm L60 guns and Vulcans) which rendered the smaller 7.62 miniguns obsolete.
The present AC-130H Spectre and AC-130U Spooky configurations no longer have the GAU-2/A as part of the currently standard weapon load, the same is currently happening with the M61 Vulcan as both weapons are being phased out of active duty.
The problem with the GAU-2/A was that it's 7.62 round is inaccurate and ineffective at the long ranges which current AC-130's are put through these days (7.62 miniguns see most service alongside helos).
These weapons were phased out so there was extra room for more ammunition for other newer (and higher caliber) weapons.
