High Tech and Curious Weaponry

Just out of complete curiosity, i created this topic so people can post interesting high tech or just plain curious (or even crazy and "funny") weaponry pictures and videos, we never know what kinds of "unusual" weapons are out there

First off i would like to speak about the High-Tech "CornerShot" weapon.



The CornerShot is a special-purpose israeli-made weapon, the unusual part about this weapon is that it can be used to fire from behind cover by actually bending the weapon (with the objective of not exposing the shooter to threats).



It's definitely a great weapon and a basic change over standard weapons, the "shoot behind cover" idea isn't new though, for example in WW2 few soldiers modified their weapons and coupled them with Periscopes to shoot behind cover (some legendary snipers used this method with great success), but those were basically old weapon designs just modified and could even have bad consequences (like fatal failures of the weapon).
But the CornerShot is definitely something else, it's made of high-tech materials coupled with excellent current-day weapon designs.



As you can notice, the shooter can aim through a high-quality digital camera (there is also night vision-camera capability, so the shooter can adapt to many kinds of environment).



This weapon was designed by former israeli soldiers who learned the price of having to get out of cover to scout ahead (making soldiers easy targets for snipers).
As a high tactical weapon, the CornerShot was specifically designed with SWAT and special operations in mind, usually revolving around hostage situations (specially in highly hostile-crowded missions).

So far there are 4 main CornerShot variants:
- The Standard version, which is mounted with a pistol (such as seen in the first pictures);
- The 40mm grenade launcher version (the one in the picture used to show the camera);
- The Assault Pistol Rifle (or APR):





That version is used specially for scenarios that require more stopping power than regular pistols, since it uses the standard 5.56mm NATO rifle cartridge;

- CornerShot Panzerfaust (or CSP):



Solely for anti-armour military duties.

It's definitely a great idea combined with a great weapon to make an original high effective weapon.
That gun may look like a silly weapon, but weapons aren't (or shouldn't be) evaluated by their looks but rather by their effectiveness and performance.
If well utilized, it can have a FANTASTIC performance on the battlefield, next time a surviving enemy watches a kitty, they'll run in fear , one thing is for certain though, the enemies wouldn't find that kitty so "cute" after facing it.

But watching a team of fully armed soldiers or a SWAT team carrying stuffed animals on their weapons would be a great lol photo , but once again, whoever they were fighting wouldn't find that sight so funny.

thats amazing. i first saw the corner shot in the movie "wanted" and i thought it was fake. But this is purely real. i think the one in 'wanted' was fake because it had flame thrower or something attached to it. still this is fucking awesome.

that excersize in the video was kind of confusing. looks like a complicated weapon too

Yeah, soldiers who use this weapon usually have to receive a special kind of training, however this weapon is specially starting to get used by special forces and SWAT units (which perform the kind of most dangerous missions and require such a tool to enhance the chances of survival and completing the mission).


About the complicated part of the weapon, well it's a special purpose weapon designed for elites (not the classic M16 or AK74), since elites are fully trained in all aspects of warfare, they can and will use every opportunity and the weapon to it's fullest extent (to complete the mission).


About that flamethrower version, it's a fictional variant (flame throwers were basically banned off the battlefield), it's probably used for adding more intensity in the movie (such a version could be used by simply adding the flamethrower's hose in the frontal part of the mechanism).

One pussy you don't want to mess with.

That's damn right, the first time I ever heard of the Kitty Cornershot I was thinking that it was sort of a "spoof mockumentary" on Future Weapons, but as we closely analyze it, we just can't stop thinking that it's definitely a great idea, specially since in that particular Israeli/Palestinian zone there are a lot of cats, this weapon sure is a smart way of increasing the odds of survival (and humor ).

But it would be hilarious to watch a SWAT team (big guys equipped with serious gear) with Kitties equipped on their weapons (it would be an epic photo)

I think I read elsewhere in the forum that one (or more) of you were joining the military to part of a tank crew.

It would be hilarious if you could have that guy mount a giant stuffed kitty on the barrel of an M1A2 and post a picture of it here in this thread. That would just be priceless.

It's certainly odd looking, and excuse me, but where would you use red for camouflage? Mars?

Now THAT's a strange camo pattern, I mean if they planned to use it on the battlefield then its the same as painting a bullseye on the forehead and start to scream aloud

That camo paint was probably adapted after the vehicle retired (for public presentation and as a way to "renew" the paint job which was probably wasted during the years in service).

Underwater Sub Detection: SBIR Tries to Think Like a Shark:

DID covered evolving US anti-submarine warfare strategy back in 2005, including the growing importance of dealing with super-quiet diesel-electric submarines in shallow-water littorals.

In response, one of the early-stage Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) approaches involves thinking entirely outside the sonar box. We talk about “submariner dolphins” – but maybe the creature they really need to emulate is the shark. Now a recent contract indicates that the US military is making real progress toward that goal…

Unlike dolphins, sharks don’t use sonar. Instead, they rely on both an acute sense of smell – and on jelly-filled canals that pick up on the tiny electrical charges a potential morsel makes when it flexes its muscles, or swims counter to the earth’s magnetic fields.

As DefenseTech.org reported in July 2005, that second ability is the subject of no less than 3 Phase I SBIR contracts that are trying to duplicate the idea for use by submarines and underwater sensors:

* RD Instruments in San Diego, CA
* Quantum Applied Science & Research, Inc. in San Diego, CA
* Advanced Ceramics Research Inc. in Tucson, AZ.

As a subsequent SBIR contract announcement explains:

“The objective of the topic is to develop a covert/low-observable sensor system for detecting and classifying small, slow moving surface or subsurface bodies in coastal shallow water, bays, port areas, or waterways utilizing weak EM signals or field deviations. This technology has broad applications for both DoD and other Defense agencies.”

Couple that with R&D into artificial shark-skin hull coatings to keep pesky barnacles and algae away, and shark-like products may have a real future.

June 25/07: Small business qualifier QUASAR Federal Systems, Inc. in San Diego, CA received a $6 million not-to-exceed, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract for a Phase III Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program contract for Topic N05-003 entitled “Shark Weak Electromagnetic (EM) Field Detection for Moving Objects.” Work will be performed in San Diego, CA and is expected to be complete in June 2012.

As DID explains below, reaching SBIR Phase III is an indication that prototypes have been created, and the firm is beginning to prepare for product development. This contract was competitively procured using SBIR Program Solicitation under Topic N05-003; 21 offers were received by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Lakehurst, NJ (N68335-07-D-0017).

Interesting , I'd love to watch a shark-like UUV (Unmanned Undersea Vehicle).

Plus this can be used with great effect in the movie industry
In Red Alert 2, they adopted the idea of dolphins in use by the Navy to create those "assault dolphins".

I love the San-Antonio Class (sure is a beautiful vessel), according to the info I've got, this ship is one of the best in terms of commodity (personnel have a lot of excellent conditions), this would be the kind of ship I wouldn't mind working on (excellent conditions, excellent defenses, high tech, etc.).

Quite an interesting tool to equip EOD Teams in the future (specially for the Military units in the Middle East ).

I saw that particular FW episode (they shown the M32 Multiple Grenade Launcher, the Dragon Skin Body Armor and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) concept and gear.

Barrett REC7 (aka M468)

Some people may wonder why we bothered to include weapons such as the HK416 / REC7 and the M4 as possible weapons when they are so look alike well, it's basically a matter of "identification" (and each one would be specially different in a way, be it model, sound, etc.), that's why we made question of including'em (extra variety is always a good thing), also, the weapons included in the poll are the most currently probable choices, the XM8 was included due to the fact that it would be a great service rifle and due to it's popularity (the XM29 OICW wasn't included because it's too uber and the fact that it was still a prototype unlike the XM8 which was combat-ready).

Did you guys know that a bunch of scrap metal from 911 is being used to construct a new ship for the U.S.? USS New York.

Yep, I sure did. I thought that was a great way to remember and honor the 9-11 victims. I really hope that in some way, in the future, this ship will have played some role in Osama bin Laden's capture or destruction.
